KFOR TIP OF THE WEEK, 2.6.12: VALENTINE SHOPPING
Do you know what's right around the corner? Valentine's Day. This week, the Better Business Bureau plays Cupid’s Little Helper.
1. What gifts will be popular this year?
-- Jewelry and flowers are always popular, but look for deep discounts on both, thanks both to a need for retailers to drive the numbers and online competition.
-- Speaking of online, an unexpected hot item for this year are electronic pads, e-readers like the Kindle or Nook. Promotions are available to make these items very affordable.
-- If you go with one of the pads, remember to get your sweetheart some subscriptions, or at least a gift card so that she can load 'em up.
2. Okay, so if a gentleman is checking the list for the perfect evening, what are some things to get crossed off early?
-- Remember that, along with Mother's Day, good restaurants book up very quickly and get very crowded.
-- Be flexible. Consider an early or later dinner than usual.
-- Beat the crowds. With Valentine's Day on a Tuesday this year, you could do dinner Sunday, a gift Monday, and maybe flowers Tuesday and stretch out the romance.

3. These are all nice thoughts, but what if your sweetheart has enough jewelry, is weight conscious, and allergic? What if she's the cutting edge of all electronic gizmos? What can a guy do to stay out of Dutch on the big day?
-- First off, we've never met the lady who has “enough jewelry.” Expand your definition. Does your sweetie have a sharp dress watch AND one to wear with jeans? Pay attention, guys. There's always something different out there.
-- What about purses or other leather goods? If you know her tastes, you could come up with a great surprise that isn't under the usual gift list?
-- When all else fails, go for a gift card and a romantic DVD a guy wouldn't watch in a million years...and watch it with her.
